Bangladesh Sets February 2026 Election Date Amid Military Oversight Debate By Staff Writer | BanglaConnection | Dhaka–Delhi Desk Dateline: Dhaka, Sept 7, 2025
Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, has unveiled a tentative roadmap for national elections, scheduled for February 2026. The announcement comes after months of political uncertainty and growing pressure from civil society and international observers.
The Election Commission is preparing a new ordinance that would authorize the deployment of the army, navy, and air force as law enforcement during the polls. While officials claim this will ensure security and transparency, critics warn that it could lead to the militarization of the democratic process.
“This will be the most transparent election in the nation’s history,” said Chief Adviser Yunus. “The people will decide, not intimidation or fraud.”
Opposition parties cautiously welcomed the timeline but expressed concern over the role of the armed forces. Human rights organizations have called for strict civilian oversight and safeguards to prevent abuse.
The proposed election date falls just before the holy month of Ramadan, prompting calls for logistical planning that respects religious sensitivities.
